Wan Jigang, a 90-year-old disabled soldier and veteran warrior to resist US aggression and aid Korea, lives in Zhaoyao Village, Fengjia Street, Qianjiang District, Chongqing.
Although the elderly are very old, their bodies are tough and their ears are weak He is deaf, and often goes to work with his wife.
In the old man’s heart, there are two things that make him unforgettable, one is the war to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea 70 years ago, and the other is that a son has disappeared inexplicably. There has been no news so far.
Wan Jigang married Su Yonglan, who was 10 years younger than himself, in 1956 and gave birth to 5 children.
In the late 1990s, his third son, Wan Xiaoshan, went to Wuhan to work alone. He married and gave birth to children. Although he rarely went home, he often wrote letters and beat Call your parents to inform them of your situation.
I don’t remember exactly what year it was. Suddenly, the son lost the news, and the phone number of the son and daughter-in-law couldn’t get through, and the specific working location was not clear for many years. Came to find no way, just disappeared inexplicably, and has been missing for about 20 years.
As he grows older, he is inconvenient to move, unable to go out and search, so he can only silently worry about him, hoping that nothing happens to his son and can go home as soon as possible.
In 1931, Wan Jigang was born in Fengjiaba, Qianjiang. I was sent to a private school in my childhood, and I have read”Three Character Classics, “Hundred Family Names”, “Four Books and Five Classics”, “The Book of Songs” and “Children”. More than a dozen ancient books such as”Study” and”Book of Rites”.
In 1951, the 20-year-old Wan Jigang and four partners responded to the country’s call to”pay for money and work harder” and signed up to join the Chinese People’s Volunteers. They were incorporated into the 63rd Army, the 189th Division, the 565th Regiment. 2 battalions and 5 companies.
The recruits were immediately drawn to Suizhong, Liaoning, Xingcheng, and they were training while marching. The troops arrived in Dandong, just across the river from North Korea. Many bridges were destroyed due to indiscriminate bombing by US military aircraft.
The troops ordered the bridge to be repaired. Wan Jigang and his comrades fought day and night, and they completed the task of repairing the bridge in half a month. They successfully completed the bridge in 10 days. After crossing the river, march all the way hurriedly, hiding during the day and marching at night.
We marched for 28 consecutive nights and arrived at Kaesong.
In June 1951, the 187, 188, and 189 divisions of the 63rd Army that Wan Jigang belonged to moved north to cover the volunteers and organized defense in Cheorwon. After 13 days and nights of fierce fighting, they successfully contained the United Nations. The army attacked, but the army suffered heavy casualties. In 1952, Wan Jigang and other recruits served as supplementary soldiers and were incorporated into the 63rd Army.
In October 1952, in order to defend Kaesong, the 63rd Army marched to Changhedong and Huazangdong areas in the northeast of Kaesong, preparing to cooperate with the 65th Army to attack the”United Nations Army” in Kaesong.
Wan Jigang’s company builds fortifications every day. The trenches are required to be deeper than standing people and wide enough for two people to carry large weapons and ammunition without restriction.
One day, When Wan Jigang and the others were digging a trench, an enemy plane came and threw a bombing point at the volunteer positions. A bomb exploded not far from Wan Jigang. Shrapnel hit his head and chest, and his right index finger was cut off. Drop a piece.
U.S. military launch In the germ warfare, the army carried out anti-rodent activities. If a person wiped out 50 rats in one night, he would record the third-class merit once. Wan Jigang studied the method of trapping rats and caught 47 rats in one night. Only three mice will be awarded. .
When I signed up as a soldier, I heard the soldiers say:”Educated people are not good things”, so Wan Jigang concealed the experience of going to private schools and quietly smashed the one he carried with him. Pens and letters are all written by the monitor.
Chairman Mao said:”An uncultured army is a stupid army, and a stupid army cannot defeat the enemy.” So the army started a movement to learn culture.
The army is equipped with new weapons. It is necessary to select educated soldiers to learn how to use them in the division, and then come back to teach everyone. Wan Jigang signed up and admitted that he had read books, so after studying at the division, he returned to teach soldiers and successfully completed the task.
After that, the company made him a clerk. Because of his literacy, he is quicker to learn Korean than others, and he is responsible for the communication between the company and the people of North Korea. He still remembers some spoken Korean to this day.
1957 In April, Wan Jigang was demobilized and returned to his hometown. The commune arranged him to be a secretary. After working for a period of time, he voluntarily asked to teach at school. So he worked for more than 20 years. In the early 1980s, the Qing retired private teachers. He left school and went home to work in agriculture. Even now at the age of 90, he is still working in the field.
