[Editor’s note]: Wang Zengqi, born in Gaoyou City, Jiangsu Province in 1920, is a contemporary Chinese writer, essayist, and dramatist. He studied under Shen Congwen and is a”Beijing writer.” Representative. This year is the 100th anniversary of his birth, and I would like to commemorate Mr.
Wang Zengqi (1920.3.5-1997.5.16)
Come to Gaoyou because of Wang Zengqi
Going to Gaoyou by car from Yangzhou is temporary, but the idea of going to Gaoyou for a long time has been around for a long time.
In the eyes of most people, Gaoyou is probably just a place full of salted duck eggs. What is more important to me is that Gao You had a Wang Zengqi, and went to Gaoyou to see the customs and customs in Wang Zengqi’s pen.
Gaoyou is a county-level city in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province. It is a small county on the edge of a canal, adjacent to Gaoyou Lake in the west and Yangzhou in the south.
The name of Gaoyou is very special. It can be traced back to 223 BC. Here, Qin Wangzheng built a high platform and set up a post box. It was named Gaoyou. It is the only city in the country named after the word”post”.
In the history of Gaoyou, a post box was set up to deliver postal posts since the Qin Dynasty. The picture shows the Yucheng post of Gaoyou.
Wang Zengqi was born here and spent his childhood and adolescence. He left Gaoyou at the age of nineteen to study at the Southwest United University in Kunming, and later settled in Beijing. From then on, his hometown was more than forty years until 61. It was the first time I went back.
In Wang Zengqi’s works, more than a third of his novels are set in his hometown of Gaoyou (this does not include the prose he recalls from his hometown). He has also written novels with Kunming, Beijing, and Zhangjiakou as background, but he thinks that the best written is about Gaoyou’s works.
Wang Zengqi is full of affection for his hometown. He turned his feelings for his hometown into words. In an interview in his later years, he said that”the materials of his hometown have not been written.”
Wang Zengqi describes the hometown of Gaoyou’s novel”Deep Aura”. The title of the book is from Qin Guan’s poem”Deep Aura Deep.”
After arriving at Gaoyou, go to Wenyoutai first.
Wenyoutai is located on Wenyou Road in the northeast of Gaoyou City. It is a high-rise building built on a hillside and belongs to the most famous scene in the ancient”Gaoyou Eight Scenic Spots”.
Wang Zengqi’s home is not far from Wenyoutai. After Wenyoutai passed the Taishan Temple in the past, when he was a child, Wang Zengqi often went to Taishan Temple to see a play, and the”Qin” engraved on the walls on both sides of the hall”Poster”, board the tour platform and watch the sails on the canal move slowly.
Wenyoutai used to be a place of elegant scholars. It originally belonged to the Taishan Temple. When Su Shi, a literary writer of the Song Dynasty, passed Gaoyou, and Gaoyou ’s township virtuous Qin Guan, Sun Jue and Wang Gong drank alcoholic poetry here. The”literature collection of the four wise men” was left. At that time, Guangling Taishou wrote a plaque for”Wenyou” and sent it. This was the Wenyou platform. Since then, it has gradually become a scholar of literati in all dynasties. Resort.
Wenyou Tai’s main entrance. The plaque reads” Huaiyu Famous Place”.
Wenyoutai has survived and has been abandoned. The existing buildings were rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty and later. Wang Zengqi wrote the essay”Wenyoutai” and made many suggestions on the construction and protection of Wenyoutai.
Wenyoutai is not big. When you enter the door, you see a statue of Qin Guan, holding a scroll and looking into the distance. It seems that something wonderful is brewing.
When Gaoyou is mentioned today, literary youths will think of Wang Zengqi, and when the ancient writers came to Gaoyou, the first thought must be Qin Guan Qin Shaoyou.
Qin Guan, a character less traveled, Gaoyou of the Northern Song Dynasty. Guan Zhitai, Ph.D., National History Officer. One of the four Sumen bachelors, he is respected as a generation of poems and author of”Huaihai Ci”. The eternal famous phrase that once wrote”If the two loves are long, how are they going up and down” is a household name.
Wang Zengqi wrote in the prose that Gao Youren has a deep feeling for Qin Shaoyou. He not only writes well, is decent, but has experienced ups and downs in his life. He has spent the rest of his life in relocation, although he still suffers from misfortune. Kuang Da,”can get bitterness in the turbulent.”
Thinking of Wang Zengqi’s experience in labor reform in Zhangjiakou in 1958, these descriptions of Qin Guan also seem to apply to himself.
The ancient Chinese tour was named after the meeting of Su Shi, Qin Guan, Sun Jue, and Wang Gong. Why only set up a statue of Qin Guan?
Because Su Dongpo is only a passenger in Gaoyou, in addition to Qin Guan, the other two are not well-known figures now. Qin Guan is the first historical celebrity in Gaoyou, so Wenyoutai is mainly Qin Shaoyou’s Taiwan.
Qin Guan Statue and Wenyoutai
Bypass Qin Guan Statue, continue northbound along the tree-lined road, and then pick up the steps and pass through the display The inscription hall of the famous monument is followed by Wenyoutai, the main building of the entire scenic spot.
The foundation of Wenyoutai is built on a soil slope with a height of only about 30 to 40 meters, so it reaches the top within a few steps. In front of it is a double-eave Xieshanding-style building with a plaque”Mounting the Clouds” hanging on the upper and lower floors, with many windows open, and it is a good place to look up.
Wang Zengqi elementary school, spring travel to the upper platform every year, lying on the windowsills on both sides for a long time, green farmland in the east, and the sails on the canal embankment can be seen as far as the west. No.
In 1991, he returned to Gaoyou for the third time. The head of the local Cultural Management Committee asked him to write an inscription. He wrote”Jiaheguanguan” and made a plaque above the east window to correspond to the west window. The original”Lake in the Sky” on the plaque was the last time he returned to Gaoyou.
Wang Zengqi’s” View of Jiahe Endlessness”inscribed on Wenyoutai
Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall
On the west side of Wenyou Terrace is the Ancient Four Sages Shrine. After the shrine is the Qinguan Reading Platform. From Wenyou Terrace, there is Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall on the east side of the scenic spot.
It is not surprising to put Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall in Wenyou Terrace. Gaoyou people often proudly say”there is Qin Shaoyou in ancient times and Wang Zengqi today.” Putting the two people’s memorial together is probably the specific operation of Gaoyou people on this sentence.
Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall is in a quaint courtyard. After entering the door, I saw a bronze statue of a old man sitting idle under a osmanthus tree in the courtyard, smoking a pipe, and an empty chair beside it, as if waiting for visitors to sit down and chat with him.
The memorial hall has three exhibition halls, which mainly introduce Wang Lao’s life and literary achievements by means of pictures and texts, and also display some manuscripts and various editions of Wang Zengqi’s collections.
The North Hall is the main exhibition hall. The collection of books donated by Wang Zengqi’s son Wang Lang on behalf of his family is equivalent to moving Wang Lao’s study from Beijing to the memorial hall as a whole. In addition to the collection of books, there are tables and chairs used by Wang Lao and some living objects.
Study relocated from the old house of Hufangqiao in Beijing
In 1993, Wang Zengqi reviewed the manuscript
Mr. Wang Zengqi’s bookcase is almost half of literary books, mainly classical literature. Among modern and modern literature books, his teacher, Mr. Shen Congwen, has the most books. In addition, there are many books on history, calligraphy and painting, opera, and folklore. Wang Lao reads a lot in these books.
The overall relocation of the study, from the former residence of Hufangqiao in Beijing, was the last place where Wang Lao lived. Wang Zengqi had no study earlier. When living in Beijing’s Ganjiakou, he shared a writing desk with his children, often anxious for the lack of a desk. He could only think about it before writing.
After moving to Puhuangyu in 1983, he had a cottage of about 7 square meters, which was his bedroom and study. Most articles written by Wang Zengqi in his life were actually written in this seven-square-meter room. It was not until 1996 when he moved to Hufangqiao that he had this real study, but only lived there for more than a year.
Wang Zengqi’s Former Residence
Wang Zengqi’s Former Residence is not far from Wenyoutai. When you write a tour, you will find Renmin Road to the east, and west to Renmin Road. It takes about ten minutes to walk.
In the past, Renmin Road was called Dong (Men) Street. It used to be one of the most prosperous streets in Gaoyou. It echoed with Nanmen Street and Beimen Street in Gaoyou City. It was renamed People’s Road after liberation.
The Dongdajie area used to be the downtown area of Gaoyou, and it still retains the look of the last century. This street is not wide. It can only take pedestrians and electric cars. There are a lot of shops along the street, and they sell everything. Most of these shops are low and shabby, but they are also full of market atmosphere.
There should be few people on this street who don’t know Wang Zengqi. In the early 1980s, Wang Zengqi returned to the literary world, publishing one after another the novels with the background of his hometown Gaoyou. Most of these novels wrote about people and things that happened on this street.
He wrote about hawkers, merchants, porters, shop assistants, carmakers, tinsmiths, silversmiths, hackers, and craftsmen in this street. Most of them are written by laborers from all walks of life, kind. People with ancient style. The main task of his old age writing seemed to be to write biography for the little people in this street.
Gaoyou Old Street full of civilians
Zhujia Lane ’s former home of Wang Zengqi, originally a corner of Wang ’s old house
An east street is connected with many streets and lanes. When passing Fugongqiao Road, I see cranes and construction sites. A large area in the crowded old city is under construction, which is very conspicuous. Ask the neighborhood to say that it is building a new Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall. Seeing that I am a foreigner, I am afraid that I am ignorant, and added a sentence, that is, the old writer who wrote”Shajiabang”, I quickly said that I knew.
Although Wang Lao wrote so many novels and prose about Gaoyou, it seems that people in his hometown are more accustomed to using that model play to issue business cards. Who makes this model show more than his novels and prose? It’s famous.
I asked again, where was Wang Zengqi’s former residence, and she froze for a moment to see that I really knew that Zhujiaxiang, which is not far away, turned in.
Continue to go forward. The alley next to the construction site is Zhujia Lane. Turn around for about 20 meters and find the former residence of Wang Zengqi.
This is a small two-story building that looks ordinary. If it was n’t for the”Wang Zengqi Former Residence” sign on the wall, it would look nothing special. There is a couplet on the door,”Everything is content with self-satisfaction, and the four seasons are the same with others”. This is Wang’s favorite sentence.
On March 5, 1920, Wang Zengqi was born in an old-fashioned landlord family on East Street. Grandfather has a culture and is also good at business. He has more than 3,000 acres of farm produce and runs two drug stores and a cloth store. He was very fond of Wang Zengqi and taught him ancient writing and calligraphy himself.
My father, Wang Jusheng, has a faint character, and is well-versed in painting, calligraphy, and painting. He also masters a variety of musical instruments. He is a versatile man with an occupation as an ophthalmologist. He often does not charge for medical treatment. His father’s interests were wide-ranging, easy-going, and compassionate, and had a great influence on Wang Zengqi.
Wang Zengqi wrote Gaoyou’s novels the most, but in fact he stayed here until he turned 19 and left. He probably didn’t expect that he would leave that long. In his later years, he wanted to go back to Gaoyou to live in one or two. In the end, this wish was not realized.
I have seen the layout of Wang ’s old house at Wenyoutai. The original residence of Wang Zengqi was not a small one. It should be just a glimpse of the former residence.
Standing in front of the door of the former residence, looking in through the glass window, as if nobody was there. Wang Lao’s half-brother brother and sister still live here. They are all old. I didn’t want to disturb their lives, so I didn’t knock.
An old man sitting in the sun diagonally opposite the former residence. I stepped forward and asked him about the former residence. The old man was very talkative. He said that the Wang family was a big family and there were nearly a hundred houses on his ancestors. This area was almost all his family’s houses. Later, the land reform was divided.
According to him, the gate of the former Wang family was in Kejia Lane (now Fugongqiao Road), and Zhujia Lane was the back door. The former residence that is retained now is only two firewood houses of that year, living with Wang Zengqi’s brother and sister.
Do you still live here? I ask.”They are moving to their relatives now, and they are about to be demolished here,” said the old man, pointing to the opposite worker. When the new memorial hall of the former house is over there, it will be demolished.
Because the house is being expanded around, the houses on the north and east sides of the house have been demolished and turned into construction sites. From the renderings shown, the memorial built on the original site of this former residence is quite large and consists of several modern buildings. 2020 is the centenary of Wang Zengqi’s birthday, which is perhaps the best way to commemorate it.

History of Gaoyou on East Street
Out of Zhujiaxiang I walked around the streets around my former residence again, hoping to find more traces related to Wang Zengqi’s book.
The collection of Wang Zengqi’s novels was once my bedside book. I am familiar with the place names described in his book. With Dongdajie as the core, he goes to Yuetang in the south, Datuo river in the north, Taishan temple in the east, and the canal in the west, all of which he often goes to.
Most of his novels are about people and things within one kilometer of his former residence. This is also the main scope of activity for a child, because he writes only Gaoyou in his memory.
Wang Zengqi wrote in the novel that there should have been two tea houses in Zhujiaxiangkou. To the west is Ruyi Tower and to the east is Deyi Tower. Now that it no longer exists, Deyi Building has been demolished, and Ruyi Building has become a small shop selling cakes.
Picture of the old Gaoyou City Zhu Ruiting
The Wang family has two pharmacies in Gaoyou City, one Wanquan Church on North Street and one Baoquan Church On East Street.
The Baoquantang pharmacy is an important place in Wang Zengqi’s novels. He comes to Baoquantang almost every day to play. The guy in the store calls him”Hei Shao” (his name is black, because he is black) ), Besides those who come to buy medicines, there are various people sitting idle in the pharmacy. He likes to come here to listen to their stories, which is described in the novel”Yi Bing”.
Baoquantang has now split into several shops, turning into a grocery store and a hairdresser.
Today’s Fugongqiao Road, which is the original Kejia Lane, opens the main gate of the Wang Family Courtyard here. The east side of Fu Gongqiao is now a farmer’s market. Vegetables and stalls are very lively. There are a lot of smoked (cooked) stalls in this area, selling various kinds of lo-mei, salted duck, roasted chicken, pubao meat, pig ears, braised beef and so on.
Wang Zengqi wrote in the novel”Yi Bing” the history of Wang Er, who was setting up a smoked stall.
In the novel, Wang Er sells cooked food every night in front of Baoquantang pharmacy. He also sells a kind of meat sausage wrapped in pupa called”pubaorou”, which is a unique local flavor. Today, Wang Er’s descendants still sell pubao meat across the Wang’s former residence, which has become a century-old brand.
The old man who is making salted duck eggs on the street
Cao Xiangkou is just across the street from Zhujia Lane where Wang ’s house is located. This alley It’s not short, about five or six hundred meters. In that year, the people in Gaoyou Beixiang passed through the alley where the firewood (reed) was sent to the people in the city. The naughty children often took a handful of reeds while the firewood was not paying attention.
The past Caoxiangkou was very lively, with many shops on both sides. In his prose”Cao Xiangkou”, Wang Zengqi described in detail the pastry shop, tobacco shop, tea stove, bath house, fragrant candle shop, mill, and sauce garden in this alley, all from his childhood observations.
The homes in the alleys have long since replaced these shops, and Caoxiangkou is no longer lively. However, there is an old bathroom in the alley called”Yutang Pond”. Old people nearby also take a bath there. It is said that Wang Zengqi also washed there when he was a child.
Wang Zengqi’s works have a significant feature, that is, his works have very few fictitious components, most of them come from real memories, and the place names are also accurate. The characters in his writing, such as carmaker, Hou Yinjiang, Wang Er, grandma Yun, Aunt Xue, etc. are actually his neighbors.
In the preface of the novel”Deep Aura”, he said:”To write a novel, you must have a true feeling. To build a tower on the sand, I don’t have this ability. Some of the characters in my novel are There are prototypes.”
Most of the prototype characters are now ancient, but their descendants should still live on this street.
The second generation of Wang in the novel” Yi Bing”still runs the business of Po Baorou
Many articles in Wang Zengqi’s life It was written in this closed, faded town. He wrote everything in memory. In Gaoyou of the 1930s and 1940s, he rarely wrote modern stories.
When you read his novel, you will be surprised that Wang Zengqi left his hometown at the age of nineteen and did not return for decades. Why does he have such a good memory, he can remember the characteristics of every store on the street clearly.
Yi Bing is one of Wang Zengqi’s masterpieces.”Yi Bing” is different from ordinary people and different from others. Wang Er’s business in the novel is getting better and better, others think he is different. Wang Zengqi was probably a stranger to become a writer. His strangeness was his observation and memory.
In his autobiographical prose collection,”Dead Water”, he said that he liked to walk around from a young age, look east and west,”I am familiar with the shops, workshops, stalls along the street, and now I am It can also clearly depict the appearance of these shops, workshops, and stalls.”
He joked,”Maybe it’s this habit of looking around and looking down that made me a writer later.”
On the west side of Caoxiangkou is Daxun Lane, which goes straight north to Daxu River, which is the one in Wang Zengqi’s”The Story of Daxu”.
The word”nao” is a lonely word. Many people don’t read it. I also saw this word for the first time when I read his novel.
Dazhen is a pond not far from the Wang family. When Wang Zengqi was young, he followed the old Zhu who carried water to Daxi every day, and he was very familiar with the scenery there. The love story of the daughter of the husband and the son of the tinsmith in”The Story of the Grandma” happened by the Grandma River.
Wang Zengqi wrote in”Notes to the Dalai Lama”:”Alas, it is a large piece of water. It is not enough to say that it is a lake. It is much larger than a pond. When the water is spring and summer, it is quite This is the source of two watercourses. There is a long and narrow sand bar in the middle of the barn, which is covered with thatch and reeds.”
In the past, the barnyard was the junction of the urban area and the countryside. By boat, you can go to villages in Beixiang.
In fact, in this place, Gaoyou people used to write”brain”. The place name is strange, and he doesn’t know why it is so called. In order to avoid the word”brain”, he wrote”brain” as”big brain” in early novels related to big brain.
In 1991, Wang Zengqi reeds in his hometown Gaoyou
Wang Zengqi described in the novel” The Chronicle of the Great Seal” Dasao, now a small park for citizens to take a leisurely walk
Later, after Wang Zengqi’s research, the word”brain” should come from the Mongolian dialect”” 儿”, which means” water pond”. Later, with the novel With the advent of”The Big Badger”, the place name Gaoyou has naturally changed from”brain” to the current”big brother”.
Walk along Daxu Lane to the edge of Daxu River. Today, it is just a larger pond with a fence. There is no”sand bar” or”massive” feeling. Without reeds and boats to and from the dock, now it is just a small park where nearby residents will come for a walk.
Of course, it is not that there are no traces of the past. At least I also saw the”Three Sacred Temples”. This is a very small temple on the west side of the Datuo River. I remember Wang Zengqi wrote it.
Wang Zengqi wrote in his essay”Three Noble Truths” when he was a child, his grandfather took him to the Noble Truths next to his grandfather, to see an old monk called Guide, who is a monk with strict discipline. , Is a friend of his grandpa. He wrote the guide monk to lead the apprentice Tieqiao, who was a friend of Wang Zengqi’s father.
Tieqiao, a disciple of the guide, is a romantic monk who looks good, writes, and draws. He is the abbot of Shanyin Temple. He was later said to have been a traitor to the uncle. He is also in the novel The Ordination. Stone bridge monk’s prototype.
Wang Zengqi is famous for writing monks. As an old writer who returned to the literary world in his later years, his masterpiece was”Ordained”, which wrote about the lives of monks in a small rural temple.
In the past, there were many temples in Gaoyou City. When he was a kid, he often went to the temples to play and see various Buddha statues. The Chengtian Temple, Shanyin Temple, and Tianwang Temple that he wrote seem to have been demolished.
Wang Zengqi also wrote a lot of monks. In addition to”ordained”, he also wrote”four monks” and”temple and monk”. Now,”ordained” is only for the”temple” And a monk.
He is not very interested in describing Buddhist monks who are serious. Wang Zengqi wrote monks to restore monks to ordinary people, or to write them as a profession. Cotton is pretty much the same as a monk.
So the monks written in The Ordination do not follow any clear rules and regulations. They eat meat, drink cards, and have wives. They can do everything ordinary people do. His secular description of these monks in the novel is not offensive, but rather strange and interesting.
The place where the story in”The Ordination” took place is real, that is, Zhaozhuang Village in the northern suburbs of Gaoyou, now called Chang Rural. That little rural temple is still there, with little change.
In 1938, in order to escape the war, the Wang Zengqi family moved to a rural village called Gao Zhaozhuang, which was far away from Gaoyou City, and lived in the”Bodhi Temple” in the village for half a year.
Gaoyou is a water town. In the past, people went out of town to towns and towns, mostly by boat. That year Wang Zengqi went to Zhaozhuang by boat.
At that time, Wang Zengqi was only 17 years old. He repeatedly read a book”Selected Works of Shen Congwen”, which gave him a stable interest in literature. Later, he applied for the Southwest United University, went to Kunming, and became a student of Shen Congwen. Forty-three years later, he published a novel, The Ordination, which wrote about the life of refuge in rural temples during that time.
The prototype temple in the novel” The Ordination”, is located in the Zhaozhuang Village in the northern suburb of Gaoyou
The Water in Gaoyou
Walk west from Renmin Road to the embankment of the Grand Canal. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is right in front of it. Today the canal is still busy with waterways, and many freighter fleets go south to north.
Wang Zengqi was to the west of the elementary school (five primary schools) when he was a child, and across a vegetable garden is the canal embankment. As a teenager, Wang Zengqi used to play on the river embankment, watching the big ships in the canal, watching the people supporting the boats, watching the fishermen, watching the ship repairers.
According to his memory, the canal embankment and the wall of the canal were generally high, and he went to the canal embankment to play, which can overlook the roof of the people under the embankment. The kite flying by the children in the city floats under the feet of tourists on the river bank.
Sometimes he also went to Xidi to play. At that time, the canal was relatively narrow, and he arrived by boat. Outside the West Dike is Gaoyou Lake, also known as Zhuhu. When Wang Zengqi was a child, the first-party seal engraved”Phuhu People.”
No need to take a boat now, you can go to the second bank of the canal to the west bank of the canal. The west bank of the canal is the east bank of Gaoyou Lake.
I have never seen such a pattern. Gaoyou City is next to the canal, and the canal is next to Gaoyou Lake. There is only a dike between Gaoyou Lake and the busy canal. I do n’t know why this is the case.
Standing on the canal embankment and looking at Gaoyou Lake, it is still calm, transparent, and a large expanse of water. There are only a few ancient sailing boats in the distance, and they stop there motionlessly, making people feel desolate and a bit mysterious. This scene is almost the same as that described in Wang Zengqi’s book Gaoyou Lake.
The setting sun over Gaoyou Lake
The cargo ship fleet on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is still busy
The tower of Zhenguo Temple on the canal, which retains the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty, is known as the”Great Wild Goose Pagoda in the South”
People familiar with Wang Zengqi’s works know Water often appears in his text. Water usually flows calmly, but it can also be turbulent.
Because Gaoyou Lake and the Canal River Embankment are higher than Gaoyou City, Gaoyou Lake and the Canal have been a hanging lake and a river since ancient times. In the rainy season, once the water level of the Gaoyou Lake and the canal skyrocketed, this pattern will Caused floods.
The great flood in 1931 was one of Wang Zengqi’s childhood memories. In that year, Gaoyou became the Ze country because of multiple executions of the canal embankment. Wang Zengqi described the flood in detail in his novel Doctor of Fishing.
“A big river has become on the street. Boxes, cabinets, dead cows, and dead people are flowing in the big river. The water has not returned for more than ten days, and many people are trapped on the roofs of trees and trees …” > p>
In addition to the catastrophe caused by the flood, he also described the situation in which his father was carrying a long bamboo wormwood and wading chest-shaped water to go out for relief every day. Once, his father and several good-water sailors, tied with iron chains, crossed the rapids to a lonely village surrounded by water to deliver noodles.
During the flood, Wang Zengqi’s family lived on the second floor of the teahouse, and the water returned after more than a week. He wrote in”Food for the Hometown” that this year, the yield of various crops was reduced, and only the mushroom was harvested. In the flood year, he ate a lot of pickled mushroom mushroom soup and found it difficult to eat.
After leaving my hometown, I did n’t eat for decades and did n’t want to. It wasn’t until one year to go to Shen Congwen’s family to celebrate Chinese New Year and ate the fried pork with mushrooms made by Zhang Zhaohe. Then he regained his long-lost feelings for mushrooms. Izumi evokes his nostalgia, and he wants to drink a bowl of pickled Izumi soup from his hometown.
